Art in the Landscape
Your garden is a wonderful place to reflect your personality and lifestyle, and there is no better way than with the use of art.  Sculpture, art pieces and  ornaments can be used as accents  to incorporate elements other than plant material that can elevate the spirit of the garden.

When selecting art and sculpture, keep in mind that a simple bold item always works best.   Placement of such items can be as a focal point to draw the eye or as a place for the eye to rest as it passes through the landscape.  Accents can also be used to pull you into the garden by placing partially viewed items in specific locations.  All elements should be in scale with the surrounding landscape so as not to dominate the area.  Pieces can be whimsical to functional depending on your style.  No matter what media you select, placement is most important.

Ornaments can be used to accent and compliment specific plant material.  Use an odd number of elements for informal designs such as a group of cement birds.  For formal design, use an even number of elements such as a large urn on either side of the front entrance.

Natural elements such as boulders can also be looked at as an art piece.  Finding the perfect piece can be part of the fun.  An accent is what makes your garden your own and identifies it as an extension of your home.  Garden centers, art fairs, special order catalogs and galleries can be good sources.  Keep your eye open for pieces in unexpected places such as yard sales, flea markets or while on vacations.  Sometimes the hunt is what makes the find so significant.  Adding an accessory to the landscape can make it come alive.  Most pieces can remain in place all year long making them a permanent part of the garden structure.
